The trip went smoothly until the very end where they started entering the devastation area. All bridges, except one, were out, and their directions pointed them to a bridge that was out. They got lost for a little while trying to find the one operational bridge. They only ran into heavy traffic a couple of times on the trip. By 4:00pm, they had their campsite set up in a grassy area near the ocean, which used to be the area where homeless people lived. How ironic – almost everyone is homeless now. They were going to an orientation meeting so they will be prepared to start work tomorrow.

Pastor’s description of the area is “UNBELIEVABLE”! It is completely flat – it is like it was bombed. There is devastation everywhere. There is a 2-story casino building that is washed up on the shoreline.
Costa Rica Day 7 Wednesday

we cannot believe that our work here has ended!! we have worked all day long for the past 6 days and it has just flown by! the day certainly ended with mixed feelings-- wow, did we accomplish alot and we are tired, but on the other hand, this was wonderful and we want to do more.....

as we walked around to look at each project, we were truly amazed at what God did--we did do alot of work, but it was God that made it all come together and He was the One who glorified Himself in it!!

as you remember, we had 3 projects to work on --the classrooms in the library, the storage room, and the rehabbing of the apartments. here´s the results of our labor:

the classrooms were all constructed--the dry wall is all in place and is taped and sanded and ready for paint. some of the sections were painted. all of the plastic was removed from the book shelves and the furntiure replaced. the furniture was dusted and cleaned and the floor cleaned and mopped. it looks great!!

the storage room, or bodego, was completed in the garage!! you would think that professional masons built this beautiful bodego. it has a doorway and looks great!

there are 3 apartments that were serviced.. tim and amanda´s apartment received: paint in the powder room, hemmed draperies in the dining/living room, curtains in the kitchen, curtain and sink skirt in the bathroom, curtains in timmy´s room, curtains and a duvet cover in tim and amanda´s bedroom, shortened curtains in shelby and kippy´s room, a newly constructed, freshly painted closet and refurbished bathroom (new fixtures and new paint) for the girls. in lora´s apartment: painted living/dining room, new curtains in 2 large windows, painted bedroom and 2 sets of curtains. in the 3rd apartment which was empty, it was totally transformed into a really nice living space. a new wall was built with a window, creating a kitchen/dining/living space, 2 bedrooms were dry walled and painted, with a closet built in, the bathroom was painted and new fixtures and vanity and medicine closet added.

tim was so grateful for all the work that was done--above and beyhond what he expected. he said he was very pleased with the quality of the work. we knew that it was God´s hand on ours...

the end is near and we are soooooo grateful to our Lord for all that He has done in and through us this week. we have learned more about what it is to be a servant. we learned that we can still give alot more... we learned that this experience builds faith... we saw how God can and did multilply the work of our hands... we saw how God was glorified in our actions, deeds, and prayers...

our devotions was in Phil 2 and how we should considers others better than ourselves and how we must imitate Christ´s humility. our attitudes must be right or else all the work we do is for naught. pastor talked about how we go on missions trips to bless them, and in the end we are so blessed by the experience....

tomorrow we will get to see a little bit of the costa rican country side.

God bless you for all of your prayers.

´david´

Costa Rica Day 8 Thursday

Hello all!

Today is our last full day in Costa Rica. It has flown by. Today was a wonderful day of fellowship, fun, and adventure. We were able to sleep in a bit and enjoy the morning as the bus did not pick us up until 9 a.m.! Along with Jay and Nancy and Tim and Amanda, we drove to La Paz Waterfall Gardens Nature Park and Wildlife Refuge. It was a paradise of tropical flowers and foliage connected with beautiful ´brick´ walkways. We strolled along viewing the gorgeous surroundings on our way to the waterfall. There were many steps and stairs going down to the base of the waterfall. At one point, we were able to practically stand underneath it. There was a mist similar to the one at Niagara Falls. We took many photo ops so you will be blessed to see them. For most of the time we were in the Rainforest or Cloud, with a light mist at all times. No wonder the foliage is so large and so beautiful. We also visited a butterfly observatory which is the largest in the world, span
ning the length of a regulation NFL football field, and reaching a height of 50 feet. We also visited a hummingbird garden filled with the feeders and the birds just fly all around our heads as we stood there.

Then we enjoyed a buffet lunch with tomatoes that would make our beefsteaks look like cherry tomatoes, along with other salad fixings, tortillas, beef chunks in a sauce, chayote, potatoes, black beans, some kind of stuffing, and papaya chunks for dessert. We all enjoyed the southern style sweet iced tea. We then boarded the bus for our ride back to town. Some of us took a siesta on the trip. We passed huge coffee plantations, but the beans had just been picked. We also saw huge greenhouses sprawling across the hillside that were growing flowers to export.

We stopped at some shops where the local artisans sold their wares. We got goodies for our loved ones and friends. Thank goodness they only allowed us 45 minutes!

Thank you again for all of your prayers and support. We will be praying for Sarah as we received the news that she is back on the ventilator.

We look forward to seeing you at the airport, church, or home when we return. Please continue to pray, especially for a safe and smooth trip home.

God bless!
´david´

Costa Rica Day 7 Wednesday

Cost Rica Day Seven Wednesday

We can’t believe that today was our last work day! It has gone by so quickly and we have mixed feelings—we are tired from all the work, but at the same time would like to accomplish more for these dear people.

When we came, Tim had a list of jobs for us to accomplish—the classrooms in the library, the storage room in the garage, and the refurbishing of the apartments. Here is what we were able accomplish through God’s provision¨:

The classrooms in the library are built! Each of the rooms are dry walled, taped, mudded, and sanded, ready for paint. The library was returned to itself—cleaned, dusted, mopped, and again useful to the students. They look great!!

The storage room is complete!! It has a door way and looks as if it were built by masons, not a pastor, teen, and computer guy.

The apartments have been transformed! Tim and Amanda received these blessings—the powder room was painted, the living/dining room curtains were hemmed and hung, the kitchen got new curtains, a bedroom was painted, got a rod and new curtains, the bath got new curtains and a sink skirt, Timmy’s room got new curtains, Shelby and Kippy had their curtains hemmed, and got a closet built and painted, and their bath received new fixtures and paint. Tim and Amanda got new curtains and a new duvet cover for their bed.
In the upstairs apartment, Lora’s living/dining room and bedroom were painted and got new curtains.
The third apartment, which was empty, is now livable. A new wall was built which now provides a kitchen/dining/living area, which was painted, and 2 bedrooms were partially rebuilt and painted, and the bathroom was painted and got new fixtures.
God multiplied the works of our hands, there is no doubt! The total ´man-hours´ worked was 785!! Thank you, Lord!

We have been so blessed to have had this experience. God has taught us things we shall not forget. We came to be servants to missionaries, and in return we were served in such ways that truly humbled us.

Thank you again for all of your prayers. They have been felt.

God bless you all and we will see you soon!

Costa Rice Day Six Tuesday

hello all!

today was a very loooooooooonnnnnnnnngggggggg day for us! it is now 9:50 and we just arrived at the hotel--we left at 7:30 this morning!! we are all very very very tired, so this will be pretty short! we hope you don´t mind!

the projects are really coming along so well!! the progress is great! andy, pastor and jordan are almost finished building the bodego!! they have reached the 13th course and it finally reaches the ceiling!! they framed in the door way, and it looks great!! the walls are so high that we really can´t see inside any more, so we are not sure what they do in there. but they are making progress!!!

kim and karen got a new helper!! the birthday boy!! i guess not that he has bridged another decade, the straw boss decided to give him a more cushier job!! the three of them painted the entire upstairs apartment!! so, from the guys that did the framing, dry walling, mudding, sanding, and now painting, the rooms are totally transformed and look terrific!!

kathy made 5 sets of curtains and tim came to the rescue and hung rods so the curtains could get hung! now timmy has curtains on the window and no longer on the bed, and the dining and living room curtains will be going up tomorrow.

mark did corner beading work and mudding the dry wall in the library, and john hung the last of the dry wall.

wayne and howard did their usual top notch electrical work.

david and brent did their usual mudding and sanding in the library.

after the hard day´s work, jay and nancy and tim and amanda took us to the ´ram luna´restaurant for a sumptuous dinner. the best part of the dinner was the view of the entire city of san jose. it was gorgeous. as a special treat, we also got to see costa rican dancers do their native dance in costume. it was exciting.

we are all beat and ready for a good night´s rest.

we love you all and miss you too. thank you so much for your prayers. we feel them all the way down here. we have accomplished so many jobs, but of course there is much more to do.

today was a very long day. we started at 7 am when the bus came to get us, and we quit about 5:30 for dinner, went to the ¨mall¨ from 6 to 7 to purchase souveniers for some of you, and we are back ´home´till 8 when we go for devotions. whew! tiring, huh!!

today we really just forged ahead all day. everyone was pretty much on the same job in the same areas, except for kim and karen who painted a different room today--shelby and kippy´s bathroom and closet, and they began to paint the upstairs apartement.

kathy made the curtains for tim and amanda´s bedroom.

we are all doing well--working hard, laughing, having fun, feeling fine, getting along, just getting tired, etc. etc. that means that some mighty prayers went up on our behalf because, i for one, did not feel attacked today, and i am sure others feel the same. we are very grateful for your prayers. they are essential.

we were happy to celebrate gary´s ´39th´birthday today! unfortunately, charlie did not let up on poor gary one bit.

i will send this now and report on devotions in tomorrow´s log.

hasta manaña!
´david´

Costa Rica Day tres Domingo

hola!

Praise Jesus, it is Sunday! we had a glorious day today in the Lord! as usual, it was a most pleasant warm, sunny 70º day. today we didn´t have to catch the bus until 9:15, so we were able to sleep a little longer (how wonderful it was) and really relax with the group at breakfast. usually we kind of eat and run, but this morning we all sat around in the outdoor eating area and just enjoyed each other´s company.

we attended the church that jay and nancy attend, which was located in the heart of san jose. a majority of the congregation (it would have been 100% had we not been there)spoke español, so we felt like we were in heaven and listening to tongues. they did try to select songs that would be familiar to us, however the words on the screen were in spanish. it was fun (for me and few others) singing the songs (or trying) in spanish. there was one song most of us knew every word--breathe. it is a very short song. the worship was very overt and spirited and lasted almost an hour. the people had a wonderful freedom in their worhip that many of us envied. some of us experience a freedom just being in a church where we did not know the people there. our missions team was introduced to the congregation along with another team that was there from the Chicago area. their pastor gave the sermon--in english, and he had an interpreter for the rest of the church. it was a great ser

mon (but we missed pastor barden) he spoke on luke 24 about are you looking for life among the dead things? he talked about when Jesus called Lazarus out of the grave, Lazarus came walking bound in the grave clothes (ropas). he likened it to us being bound by our sins and not having the freedom that Christ has for us. the pastor gave an alter call for people to give their bondages to Jesus. it was a very powerful service.
charged and ready to go, we hopped back on the bus and went to the work site where nancy and amanda were waiting for us with a delicious lunch of homemade meatball, cheese filled raviolis, hot garlic bread, salad, and cake. then it was time to accomplish much for the kingdom! it was now about 12:30--1:00 and we could only work until 5:30, so we were eager...

tim, gary, john, and mark doubled up and worked in the classroom additions in the library. they were able to get most of the dry wall up--and we are talking up to the ceiling. howard and wayne were putting in electrical outlets and wiring. they also did the same at the apartments.

meanwhile, andy, jordan, and pastor continued laying block in the bodego. they built 2 courses on one wall and 3 courses on the other, with jordan mixing 6 wheelbarrels of mortar/cement.

karen and kim painted an entire bedroom in tim and amanda´s apartment. they are doing such a great job that they have been offered moonlighting job back in the states. yesterday, amanda went into her freshly painted bathroom, admired it, then screemed, Ï love it´! it is wonderful to serve people who are truly grateful.

kathy completed the kitchen curtains, 4 pairs of dining/living room curtains, and a ´skirt´for the bathroom sink.

david and brent continued to hang dry wall, mud, tape, and sand. i never saw david walk to any destination. he was always jogging there! no wonder they got so much done

charlie wore out another pair of sneakers watching over each team and encouraging and uplifting us all.

we left at 5:30 loaded with sandwiches, chips, cookies, fruit, and drinks for the hotel. we met again for devotions. this time, charlie had a message for us. he read to us from I cor. 12 about the parts of the body each being important and needed by the other parts of the body. he told us of when he was in beleze and there was a time that he looked at each worker as just a man, not God´s glory working through each man. he wanted us all to be encouraged that we each are important to this team and that God´s glory is what is important.

we prayed for mark´s daughter madelaine who has had a very temperature, sara persutte, gary´s back and his birthday tomorrow, wayne´s stomach and digestive illness.

we love and miss you all. thank you so much for your prayers. please continue to pray for protection for us all. we are feeling attacks. thank you.

CostaRica Day 3 Sabado

hello again,

well, another great start with a great, delicious, fortifying breakfast! john, especially ate a very healthy breakfast of a couple of bowls of cocoa crispies! he will be wired until lunch... you would think he might get sick eating that, but instead, wayne was not feeling well. he attributed it to eating too many different foods too quickly. he stayed back at the hotel for the morning to rest and heal.

we took off again for a thrilling ride on the bus on those narrow streets. fortuneately today is sabado and there was not much traffic. thank you Jesus!

once at the site, the ladies took off for the store to purchase food for breaks and meals. we were so surprised at what we found at the grocery store!! first of all, there was a security guard in the parking lot. as we walked into the store, he gave us a slip of paper. we had to return it to him when we left. no slip, no leave the country. [not really, it's just a security check] inside the store, it was super clean and super neat. i thought that the husband from 'sleeping with the enemy' was the stock boy. every can and box was placed perfectly on the shelves. hardly an item was out of place. the aisles were very wide and most did not have so many displays in them that you could hardly get by. the meat and fish counters were beautifully displayed and fresh, as were the fruits and veggies. and the prices were fabulous!! i bought mayonaise in a plastic squeeze pouch that is flavored with lemon! we don't have that in the states. it cost about 535 colones, or abou
t $1.25 american [you divide the colones by 460!!! i need a calculator for that high finance]
as nascar nancy [i don't know why they call her that] drove us home, we passed several costa ricans in the middle of the street or at the curb selling all kinds of goods--newspapers, coconuts, strawberries, mangos, flowers, etc. it seemed a little dangerous, but they just walk right up to the vehicle to try to sell you their wares. we bought mangos and strawberries. wow did the car smell great!!!

once back at the site, it was all work to catch up to the guys. kathy worked double time to make those curtains for tim and amanda's kids. kim and karen cut up strawberries, mangos, and bananas for the morning break feast. then they painted the upstairs bedroom. good job, ladies!

Jay went to the hotel to bring wayne back. he was feeling much better, praise the Lord, but had little energy. that did not, however, prevent him from fixing an outlet in tim's living room. and he did it in 2 minutes. he is a very good electrician. howard was working on his own most of the day, so we did not see much of him again, except to come see karen and kiss her. isn't marriage, in the Lord?

time and gary built scaffolding in the library to build the classrooms on a second floor loft so they could work from both sides;, then they had to carry the steel studs, all the tools, and the sheets of dry wall up the stairs or the scaffolding to build the walls mark and john help them stud the walls and hang the dry wall.

david spent the entire day running from job to job hanging, taping and mudding the dry wall. he was sopped all day. tonight is his turn to sleep well.

brent also spent the day working with the dry wall. you know how the president always shows age several months after taking office?? well brent is in the categorys--he had dark hair just yesterday and today he was "white" i guess that dry wall sanding is really stressful.

andy, jordan, and pastor worked diligently on the storage room--bedago--walls. today they added 3 courses on one wall and 4 courses on the other wall!! they are truly bountiful, bociferous, begago builders, aren't they. today, jordie mixed about 11 wheelbarrels full of mortar. youth is wonderful.

around 4 o'clock, everyone was on a roll, and bingo! the power went off in the entire block! we were all surprised, but the missionaries weren't. eveidentally, this was a common occrance. we continued to work, as there was still day light, and the apartments have many sky lights. we however, could not eat dinner there, so we all went to BK--you know, burger king.
back at our casa, it was time for devotions, and pastor talked to us about the harvest being plentiful, but the workers few [Mt 9:35] we have a wonderful opportunity to directly help the missionaries that go into the field. without help from groups like us, they cannot get the work done. they give so much, and they need a lot of encouragement from others, and us. it was a wonderful time of sharing.

tomorrow we get to sleep a little longer. praise God!

God is doing a wonderful work here. thank you again for your support and prayers. we miss you and love you...

Costa Rica Day 2 Friday

hello all!
please remember that i am writing this on a spanish keyboard and i am ommitting capitals for the sake of time.

i am ready to write about day 3 and discovered that day 2 did not make it, so i must rewrite it by memory...so here goes...

well, we were up and át ém´ by 6:30 to get a good breakfast to fortify ourselves for a long, hard days´work. everyone had a good night sleep and were raring to go. the bus picked us up at 7:20 to take us to the work site. what a beautiful day--about 70º, sunny, with a beautiful sse breeze ( i don´t which direction it came from, but that sounds good) charlie and tim-- a missionary that works with jay who is very knowledgable about construction--gave everyone their assignments. we all went about our jobs with gusto! nancy provided a delicous fresh fruit snack mid morning to keep us going until lunch. by 5 o´clock we were all done (in). here´s what was accomplished by our very able and hard working team ( and by the end of the day, we truly seemed to be a team)

kim and karen painted the upstairs apartment living room as well as tim and amanda´s bathroom. if you want to know what colors they used, just look at their clothing and you will know.

kathy and nancy measured all of the windows that need curtains, and the other sewing jobs that are needed and then went to the store to purchase the fabric. tomorrow they will go to another store to purchase matching thread as there was not enough time to do both. some things are done differently down here. the curtains will surely "finish off" the rooms and show off the work that the team has done.

tim and gary cleaned out the storage area in the library--what an undertaking that was! after that, they still had enough energy left to cover all of the book cases in the library with black plastic to protect them from the dry wall dust that will appear in a day or two; and after that they hauled dry wall from the school across the street to the apartment to hang in the closet. both men slept like babies that night.

andy, jordan, and pastor began to build a storage room in the garage area under tim´s apartment. they built it of concrete blocks. due to the earthquake threat here in san jose, every third row of block required rebar to be cemented in horizontally, and the blocks had to have vertical rebar cemented in. as you can imagine, this took quite a lot of time to accomplish. jordan mixed 9 wheelbarrels of cement and mortar to keep the walls together. now we know why they call brick laying ¨back breaking work¨ here in costa rica, a storage room is a bedago. by the end of the day, these 3 men assembled 3 courses of block! i guess you would call them "bociferous badego builders", wouldn´t you?

mark and john were in the upstairs apartment all day building the walls of the closet and later building the walls in the library. they slept well also.
brent and david spent the entire day putting up dry wall, and then taped and spackled it.

charlie wore out a pair of sneakers walking around checking on everyone and busting a few chops to keep everyone smiling. i am not sure if he slept at all.

nancy provided us with a delicious authentic costa rican dinner of pollo y arozo, which to you gringos is chicken and rice, along with an avocado salad with tomatoes, refried negro (black in español) pintos (beans), which many of us thought (or hoped ) was chocolate pudding cake!!! for dessert she baked a lucious pineapple cake. *can you tell how important the food is to us right now????

when we returned to the hotel, we had devotions with pastor. he shared Psalm 104:23 that God´s creation is beautiful, but it is the people that are important. that is why we are here--to help these missionaries and to encourage them. we have all experienced instant bonding with each other and with the missionaries; this of course is due to our love of Jesus. pastor reminded us that if our purpose is to save only one soul, the trip was a success. he told us that he and charlie sat next to a man on the plane ride from dulles to san jose who just so happened to live in irondequoit!! they got talking, and this man wants to come to check out living word out! God is in control, and He is orchestrating this missions trip. He will open doors for us and we must walk through. pastor told us what a great job we all did today (except for wayne and howard--no one really saw them except at lunch and when wayne asked jordie and andy if he could use a short piece of rebar-- [isn't w
ayne an electrician???] [actually wayne was going to work in an electrical box and needed to shut off the electricity. unable to find the corresponding breaker, he decided to cram a piece of rebar into the box to break the circuit. pretty smart, huh? but, it didn't work, but wayne is still alive i am happy to report.] we prayed for sara persutte, darryl-the man on the airplane, and one of the missionaries who is struggling.
some went to play cards and some went to sleep . we are so grateful to all of you that supported us and are supporting us in prayer. we had a terrific first full day on the job and God is so wonderful--He has blessed us more abundantly and beyond what we could hope or imagine.....

until tomorrow...

Welcome!

Thanks for visiting. Kim, karen, and kathy
wanted to ride up there, but decided otherwise. we
set off for our accomodations scurrying along very
narrow 6 lanes of highway. all was well until the
driver just stopped the van, got out of the vehicle,
and climbed up to the roof. we all just looked at
each other as if --what just happened? and whose
luggage is strewn along the highway?
well, thankfully all was well and the driver never
said a word about what he did and we didn´t dare ask.
after checking into our rooms, we met Jay and Nancy
for a lucious dinner and then a short meeting
informing us all the projects that need to be done,
ie., dry wall, brick, and paint the library; dry wall
and paint at least one apartment, and finally clean
out and then finish storage room. and of course kathy
is going to finish off some of the projects with
curtains. well, we will be ´¨at it¨¨ very early
tomorrow morning---until tomorrow,
your devoted costa rican missionaries

Build it and they will come

I've let everyone know down there that we're excitedly waiting to hear
from them... wonder what will happen next?!

Cheers,
Ken
LW webmonkey
